The Pentagon has significantly expanded its military posture in the Middle East and Europe following intensifying strikes between Israel and Iran, U.S. officials confirmed Monday. The U.S. has deployed over two dozen aerial refueling aircraft to bases across Europe and accelerated the deployment of the USS Nimitz carrier strike group toward the region.

The moves come in response to fears that U.S. forces or assets may soon be drawn directly into the conflict, despite official claims of a defensive posture. “Protecting U.S. forces is our top priority,” said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, while emphasizing readiness and deterrence.

American Forces Actively Supporting Israel

Though the U.S. has not publicly acknowledged participation in offensive operations, American pilots are reportedly engaging Iranian drones alongside Israeli forces. U.S. missile defense systems—such as Patriot and THAAD—have already intercepted multiple Iranian threats in the region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed ongoing coordination with President Donald Trump and did not rule out targeting Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Naval and Air Assets Surged Across Region

In addition to the USS Nimitz, the Navy’s assets now include:

• USS Carl Vinson strike group in the Arabian Sea.
• Multiple destroyers and cruisers in the Red Sea and Mediterranean.
• The USS Canberra, recently docked in Bahrain.

These deployments create a multilayered deterrent against Iranian escalation while enabling rapid strike capabilities if U.S. assets are attacked.

Political Fallout and Legal Concerns in Washington

With tensions rising, lawmakers are questioning the legality of any potential unilateral U.S. action. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) introduced legislation reinforcing the 1973 War Powers Resolution, warning of another “endless conflict.” Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced a similar House resolution.

Despite bipartisan concern, a divided Congress and general GOP reluctance to challenge the president may limit any legislative restraints.
