U.S. President Donald Trump signaled that a decision on striking Iran could come “within a week, or maybe less,” as the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier heads toward the region and global allies brace for a possible American entry into the Israel-Iran conflict.

U.S. Forces Shift, Strike Option on the Table

In his strongest comments yet, Trump said Wednesday that military action against Iran is on the table, stating bluntly: “I may do it. I may not do it.” With the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz moving into position and other U.S. assets converging in the region, the administration appears to be preparing for rapid escalation.

While Trump asserted that Tehran wanted to negotiate, Iranian officials denied the claim.

UK, Allies on Alert as Diego Garcia Mentioned

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer placed his cabinet on standby, contemplating potential threats to British personnel and interests in the region. Discussions reportedly included the prospect of launching strikes from the U.S.-UK joint base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean—an option that would tie London more directly to any American military action.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had spoken with all sides, but declared that the outcome would depend entirely on Israel, Iran, and the U.S.

Energy Markets Respond Cautiously

Despite heightened tensions, crude oil exports from the Middle East remain largely unaffected for now. However, freight prices for oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz—a key choke point for one-third of global seaborne oil—have more than doubled since Israel’s initial strike on Iran.

Demand for alternative energy sources like palm and soybean oil has also spiked, reflecting market fears of disruption.

Background: Rising Toll, Secret Ops, Civilian Fear

Israeli missile strikes have already eliminated several senior Iranian military and nuclear officials. Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks have killed at least 24 people in Israel, while Israeli air raids have left more than 220 dead in Iran.

Analysts point to a secret prewar campaign involving cyber operations, undercover agents, and precision weapons. Civilians in Tehran continue to face warnings to evacuate, though many refuse to leave despite the risk.

Trump faces pushback at home. Former adviser Steve Bannon warned that a new Middle East war “would tear the country apart.”
