The Philippines and United States have conducted their seventh joint maritime drills in the South China Sea, underscoring their deepening defense ties as tensions persist with China over contested waters.

According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Wednesday’s “maritime cooperative activity” included coastal fire support and shoreline maneuvers near the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Zambales. “It is a demonstration of both nations' resolve to deepen cooperation and enhance interoperability in line with international law,” the military said.

The drill featured the BRP Miguel Malvar, a 118-meter guided missile frigate newly commissioned under the Philippines' military modernization program. The vessel is one of two corvettes built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Strategic Alliance Amid China’s Claims

Military engagements between the treaty allies have surged under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has aligned more closely with Washington in response to China’s growing presence in the region. Beijing claims sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, including areas within the exclusive economic zones of the Philippines and several Southeast Asian neighbors.

The joint drills highlight Manila’s increasing assertiveness and reliance on U.S. support to counterbalance Chinese maritime ambitions.
