Russian Drone Hits Route of Train Carrying Boris Johnson and EU Security Advisers

Former British prime minister Boris Johnson and senior European security officials were traveling overnight from Kyiv when a Russian drone struck a passenger-train locomotive on the same route, two kilometers from the Polish border.

Their chartered train was halted at about 5 a.m. and partially evacuated before an all-clear was given. The group was returning from the YES security conference in Kyiv.

Among those aboard were German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s top security adviser and security advisers from the U.K., France and Italy.

Strike Near Poland

Ukraine’s state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said the drone hit a locomotive in the western Volyn region, close to the Polish frontier. No casualties were believed to have resulted from the incident.

“For the second day in a row, the enemy has been attacking the railways. Today in the Volyn region, two km from the border with Poland, the enemy struck the locomotive of a passenger train,” the operator said.

Railway threat-monitoring teams had detected the danger before the strike and warned the crew, giving staff time to take protective measures.

“We are continuing to monitor aerial threats, ensure the smooth running of trains and take every possible measure to ensure the safety of passengers and railway staff,” Ukrzaliznytsia said.

Polish Aircraft Scrambled

Poland scrambled military aircraft as Russian attacks reached western Ukrainian regions bordering the country.

Residents in the Lublin and Podkarpackie regions received alerts warning of Russian air attacks on Ukrainian territory and informing them that Polish military aircraft were operating.

Polish authorities later said the country’s airspace had not been breached.

Defense minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Polish systems had detected an early-morning attack involving Geran-5 drones in western Ukraine.

“One of them struck 1 km from the border with Poland, another 5 km. The Polish airspace was guarded by F16 aircraft, helicopters, and the SAAB airborne reconnaissance aircraft. There was no breach of our border,” he said.

Border Traffic Disrupted

The drone strike came during a wider overnight Russian air offensive involving more than 450 drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

At least three people were killed and 36 injured in the broader attacks.

The scale of the strikes led authorities to temporarily restrict traffic at Polish-Ukrainian border crossings.

Authorities suspended checks overnight at several points before operations returned to normal.

Poland’s Border Guard said it had recorded no direct threat to Polish crossings.

A spokesperson said Ukrainian authorities had reported that a drone struck and destroyed a truck about 800 meters from the Jagodzin crossing.

Kyiv Calls for Stronger Sanctions

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attacks near Poland as a direct warning to the EU and NATO.

“This is Putin’s terror 'knocking' directly on the doors of the EU and NATO. Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners,” he wrote.

Sybiha called for tougher measures against Moscow, including a full trade embargo, entry bans and broader sanctions on Russia’s military-industrial sector.
