US Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack - AA
The United States is prepared to facilitate reconciliation between Türkiye and Greece, according to US Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack. In a wide-ranging interview with Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Barrack called the ongoing disputes between Ankara and Athens “largely meaningless” and emphasized the need for communication, cooperation, and practical steps to reduce regional tensions.
Tensions Between Türkiye and Greece
In the interview, Barrack elaborated on historical and current frictions between the two NATO members. “Much of this tension stems from conflicts dating back hundreds, even thousands, of years,” he said, stressing that the current discord is unnecessary. Barrack reiterated that Washington aims to play a constructive role, acting as a “mortar between two bricks” to gradually bring the countries closer together.
He added: “This is a time for new cooperation. Step by step, both sides can approach each other, and the United States is ready to help facilitate this process.”
Dialogue as a Path Forward
Ambassador Barrack highlighted the essential role of communication in reducing tensions. “Everything begins with dialogue,” he said. “If Türkiye and Greece can move toward each other, it will increase hope not only for governments but for the people of both nations.”
He confirmed that the issue is also discussed at the highest level: “We are addressing this matter directly with President Donald Trump. The goal is to find common ground and open opportunities for collaboration.”
Cyprus and Eastern Mediterranean Initiatives
Barrack also addressed broader regional challenges, emphasizing the importance of the Cyprus issue. “Cyprus is vital for regional stability. You cannot have an abscess at the center of a healthy body—every part must be treated. The Cyprus problem will be resolved,” he said.
He proposed the creation of a forum focused on Eastern Mediterranean cooperation, highlighting the strategic need for structured dialogue in the region.
Heybeliada Theological School Reopening
The Ambassador concluded the interview by discussing cultural and educational initiatives, specifically the Heybeliada Theological School. Barrack noted that the school “could reopen in September,” reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral and cultural ties between Türkiye and Greece.
