The United Nations has raised alarms about the growing instability in the Central African Republic (CAR) due to the spillover effects of the conflict in Sudan. The CAR, already grappling with internal rebellions, is now facing an influx of armed groups crossing the border from Sudan, further destabilizing the region. This includes incursions by Sudanese paramilitary forces, aggravating the already fragile security situation in the northeast of CAR.

Increasing Refugee Crisis and Security Threats

The report highlights the alarming number of Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict, with over 36,000 seeking refuge in CAR as of June 1. These refugees are not only straining local resources but also contributing to the rise in armed conflict as Sudanese combatants reportedly recruit from among the displaced populations.

UN Calls for Continued Support for CAR’s Stability

UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix underscored that the CAR is at a “delicate juncture” and emphasized the importance of sustained international support. He stated that while progress has been made toward upcoming elections in the CAR, continued international backing is essential to ensure that this progress is not derailed by the conflict spillover.

Ongoing Instability in the Region

The CAR’s UN ambassador, Marius Aristide Hoja Nzessioue, expressed concern over the threat posed by Sudanese armed groups, noting that they are not only compromising CAR’s sovereignty but also threatening to escalate the violence further. Lacroix also noted the heightened fragility of the border regions, urging the international community to remain engaged and provide the necessary assistance to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in both Sudan and the CAR.
