The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for the immediate withdrawal of all recently deployed armed groups from Tripoli, warning that the capital faces an escalating risk of conflict amid new military mobilizations.
In a statement issued on July 10, UNSMIL urged all parties to refrain from violence and provocative actions, emphasizing that the protection of civilians must remain the top priority.
Escalation Threatens Fragile Stability
The UN’s call follows a spike in armed movements in and around Tripoli, raising fears of another outbreak of street clashes between rival factions. The mission cautioned that further escalation would endanger densely populated areas and undermine ongoing political and security efforts.
UNSMIL referenced a May 17 UN Security Council statement reminding all political and security actors of their legal obligation to safeguard civilians. “Violations against civilians will lead to accountability under international law,” the mission stressed.
UN Reaffirms Support For Security Committees
The UN reaffirmed its support for the Ceasefire Monitoring and Security Arrangements Committees and called for the urgent implementation of their mandates. It also reiterated its commitment to ongoing de-escalation efforts through engagement with all Libyan stakeholders.
“The only path to peace in Tripoli and across Libya is dialogue, not violence,” UNSMIL declared. “National responsibility and reason must prevail.”
The warning comes as Tripoli remains vulnerable to power struggles among militias and rival political factions, threatening the country’s fragile peace process.
