Ukraine Battles Encirclement in Donetsk
Heavy urban fighting continues in Pokrovsk as Russian troops push deeper into the city. The battle’s outcome could determine control of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk front.

Russian forces have entered multiple districts of Pokrovsk, turning the once-industrial hub into a contested urban battlefield.
Ukrainian defenders are holding core positions but face severe numerical and logistical disadvantages.
Pokrovsk at the Center of Donetsk Offensive
Russian units have breached Pokrovsk’s southeastern districts, sparking street combat and sabotage across residential zones.
As of late October 2025, Ukrainian command confirmed Russian footholds near Myrnohrad and in several urban sectors.
Drone strikes from both armies have saturated the airspace, hampering logistics and complicating civilian evacuation.
The Ukrainian garrison describes the situation as “critical,” with parts of the city under intermittent Russian control.
Strategic Hub Under Threat
Pokrovsk’s road and rail junctions underpin Ukrainian supply to the Donetsk front.
Its loss would sever links toward Kramatorsk and Sloviansk and weaken broader eastern defenses.
Before the war, the city held about 60,000 people; now fewer than 1,000 civilians remain.
Analysts warn that a fall could force Ukrainian withdrawal to fortified lines farther west, eroding morale across the region.
“Difficult, But Under Control”
President Volodymyr Zelensky called the situation “difficult” but dismissed Russian claims of full encirclement.
He said roughly 200 Russian soldiers infiltrated Pokrovsk while insisting Ukrainian troops locally outnumber them.
Kyiv estimates Russia has deployed some 170,000 troops in the wider sector—an 8-to-1 superiority in places—yet maintains defensive cohesion.
Ukraine has inserted special forces from the Defense Intelligence (HUR) using U.S.-supplied Black Hawk helicopters to reinforce positions and counter Russian penetration.
Russian Deadlines and Drone Warfare
Moscow’s leadership reportedly ordered Pokrovsk seized by mid-November 2025.
Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed Ukrainian units are surrounded, a claim Kyiv rejects.
Russian formations of about 11,000 troops have advanced northward, crossing rail lines and cutting the M-30 highway to impose fire control over supply routes.
According to pro-Russian sources, more than 500 drone crews operate in the area, conducting reconnaissance and strike missions that disrupt Ukrainian movement.
Civilian Toll and Frontline Stagnation
By November 1, 2025, Ukrainian counterattacks near Rodynske and northern Pokrovsk inflicted localized damage but failed to regain full control.
Russian forces now hold roughly 55 percent of the city, largely south of the railway.
Ukrainian intelligence reports 250 Russian infiltrators still active inside, engaging in street-level ambushes.
Civilian casualties have risen 30 percent this year, driven by artillery and drone bombardment, while manpower shortages force Ukrainian troops to march 10–15 km on foot to contested fronts.
