British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation Monday in a formal statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street.
Starmer has confirmed he will remain in office until a leadership contest is complete, pledging his full support to his eventual successor.
The decision follows intense pressure from Labour lawmakers after a crucial by-election victory cleared the path for an anticipated leadership challenge by veteran politician Andy Burnham.
With Starmer’s resignation, the United Kingdom will appoint its seventh prime minister within a single decade.
The 63-year-old former lawyer had previously insisted he would resist attempts to oust him, but he underwent a reassessment over the weekend.
The Leadership Timetable
Starmer stated he will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to establish a swift timetable for the transition.
Under the proposed plan, nominations for the party leadership will officially open on July 9.
The process is scheduled to be completed by the start of the summer recess.
In the event of a competitive contest, the schedule ensures a new leader will be securely in place before September.
Orderly Handover of Power
The outgoing prime minister emphasized his intention to manage a stable political transition.
Starmer stated he will do everything possible to ensure an orderly handover of power over the coming weeks.
He will maintain full prime ministerial duties until the party contest concludes.
The transition plan aims to minimize executive disruption during the selection of Britain's next head of government.
Pressure Mounted With Burnham Win
More than 100 of Labour's 403 members of parliament had reportedly urged Starmer to step down.
Senior cabinet officials, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, were among those advising the prime minister to resign.
The internal revolt intensified after Andy Burnham won last week's by-election in the northwest Makerfield constituency.
Under party rules, the leader of the center-left party must hold a seat in parliament, a requirement Burnham fulfilled on Monday.
Political Fallout and Succession
Starmer spent the weekend at Chequers, the prime ministerial country retreat, holding consultations with political allies and drafting his resignation speech.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle confirmed Starmer spent the period reflecting on current political realities, challenges, and opportunities.
The current transition timetable could see Starmer remain in office until after the summer. A new party leader would then be formally introduced at the Labour conference in late September.
Burnham, who has served as the mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017, has signaled his intention to lead the party.
Because Labour holds a substantial parliamentary majority, Burnham could become prime minister by default if no other challengers emerge.
A Tenure Defined by Scandals
Starmer entered office in July 2024, but his administration was quickly compromised by policy reversals, electoral losses, and scandals.
He narrowly survived a leadership threat in March over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, an associate of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as ambassador to Washington.
Domestic policy failures also drew international criticism. U.S. President Donald Trump noted Starmer's impending departure on Sunday, citing failures in immigration and energy policy following a diplomatic rupture over the war in Iran.
