UAE presidential advisor Anwar Gargash confirmed that economic and developmental issues were “at the core” of the talks between President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa. Gargash described the meeting as a reflection of “deep fraternal ties” and reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to supporting Syria’s transition and reconstruction.

Writing on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gargash noted the importance of the large Syrian diaspora in the Emirates—estimated at around 400,000 people—calling it a “key to cooperation and a pillar of the UAE’s strategic role in the region.”

He added, “Economic and developmental success is essential to putting Syria on the path to recovery and prosperity,” suggesting that the UAE sees stability in Syria as a long-term strategic interest.

A Signal Of Regional Reintegration

President Al-Sharaa’s visit marks his second official trip to Abu Dhabi since taking office during Syria’s transitional phase. According to the UAE’s state news agency WAM, the two leaders discussed bilateral ties and regional issues of mutual concern, furthering diplomatic engagement following Syria’s gradual reentry into Arab political circles.

The meeting follows similar diplomatic overtures by Gulf countries toward Damascus in recent years, especially after Syria’s reinstatement into the Arab League in 2023.

Observers view the UAE’s outreach as part of a broader strategy to foster regional stability through economic integration and to distance Syria from competing geopolitical influences. The discussions may pave the way for investment initiatives, trade deals, and reconstruction projects led by Gulf-based actors.
