Turkish authorities on Friday canceled scheduled port stops for an American LGBTQ+ cruise, the "Athens to Venice" voyage organized by Atlantis Events, citing behavior "incompatible with the fabric of our society and our moral values."
The ship, Scarlet Lady, is owned by Richard Branson-backed Virgin Voyages and was set to carry roughly 1,900 passengers.
Itinerary Rerouted to Egypt and Crete
The vessel had been scheduled to dock in Kuşadası two days after departure, followed by Istanbul, according to Atlantis Events.
Local authorities in Türkiye's Aydin province said there was "absolutely no possibility" of the group visiting for "an event of this nature."
Atlantis said it will now stop in Cairo, Egypt, and the Greek island of Crete instead, telling passengers the change came "due to circumstances beyond our control," CNN reported.
"First Time in 36 Years"
Rich Campbell, president and CEO of Atlantis Events, told CNN the decision was "pretty stunning," adding it marked the first time in the company's 36-year history it had experienced a reaction of this nature.
Türkiye’s ruling AK Party has taken firm positions on LGBTQ+ issues over the past decade.
Istanbul authorities have also barred LGBTQ+ marches since 2015, citing public safety.
