President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States would begin imposing tariffs and sanctions on Russia within 10 days unless Moscow shows clear progress toward ending its prolonged war in Ukraine.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed he had not received any signal from the Kremlin and was now prepared to follow through with measures previously delayed. “We’re going to put on tariffs and the various things that you put on,” he said, casting doubt on President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to seek peace.

The decision accelerates an earlier 50-day ultimatum Trump issued in June, signaling increased frustration within the White House over Russia’s continued military offensive.

Oil Prices and Secondary Sanctions

Trump said he is not concerned about the potential impact of sanctions on global oil markets, asserting that domestic US oil production would be ramped up to mitigate any disruptions.

Separately, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent disclosed that the US has warned Chinese officials that Beijing could face steep tariffs if it continues purchasing Russian oil—an indication that Washington is also prepared to impose secondary sanctions on Russia’s key trading partners.

Trump’s tougher posture comes as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain stalled. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev denounced the move as “a game of ultimatums” that could escalate into broader conflict.

Trump: I am giving Putin 10 days from today. Then we are going to put on tariffs.

The Trump administration is also grappling with other global flashpoints, including the war in Gaza. Trump has often touted his ability to resolve international conflicts, citing past roles in easing tensions between India and Pakistan and Rwanda and Congo. During his campaign, he repeatedly promised to resolve the Ukraine war “in a day” if re-elected.

The new sanctions warning appears to be a critical test of that claim.
