President Donald Trump said on Wednesday it was “largely true” that the Iran war cost Republicans in the midterms. He was responding to a question about Vice President JD Vance’s remarks blaming the war.

“I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short-term,” Trump told reporters. He spoke during a tour of the White House ballroom construction, White House reporter Jennifer Jacobs noted.

“You Have No Choice”

“If I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again,” Trump said. Long-term, he said, “it’s the only answer.”

“You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” he added. Asked whether the war was worth it, he replied: “I do, yeah.” He also said, “I thought the oil would go up a lot more.”

“The Price, Not the War”

Trump later narrowed his point to fuel costs. “Probably that’s the primary reason, the price, not the war, the price,” he said.

He also said he would “probably” get along with Democrats “unless they want to be destructive.” Earlier, Trump had said he would accept the results and work with Democrats.
