Vance Blames Iran War for Midterm Loss, Cites Israel Ties Among Voter Demands
JD Vance says the Iran war cost Republicans the midterms. He cites a pollster who found defecting Trump voters wanted the war ended, a cost-of-living focus, America First and a changed relationship with Israel.

Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in the Nov. 3 vote. Republicans lost at least seven Senate seats and about 30 House seats, according to Decision Desk HQ projections reported by The Hill. Full results are on Clash Report’s midterm tracking center.
Vance set out his case in a lengthy post on X on Wednesday, the day after the vote.
Four Demands From Defecting Voters
A pollster told Vance on election day that Republicans would lose the generic ballot by 13 points. The same pollster asked Trump 2024 voters who had abandoned the party what would bring them back.
“The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel,” Vance wrote.
“Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results,” he added.
Defection, Not Turnout
Vance rejected the idea that low turnout sank the party. Republican data analysts had judged turnout “merely OK” in some states and “downright amazing” in others, he wrote, adding that “in no state was it catastrophic.”
He pointed to Florida, where the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democratic, a couple of points worse than in 2024. “The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he wrote.
A Challenge to War Supporters
Vance conceded that the party’s economic messaging was not sharp enough down the stretch, but said “the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.”
“If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest,” he wrote.
He also defended Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy, who drew criticism on Monday for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, saying her political advice had proved sound. On immigration, he warned that “anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you.”
Trump Admits Iran Was a Factor
Trump told Fox News on election night: “I think a part of it was Iran.” He told The Wall Street Journal that “Iran was a piece of it” but stood by the decision, Reuters reported. “I did the right thing. I would have done it again,” he said.
The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began in late February and is in its ninth month, driving up gasoline and diesel prices. Axios has reported that Trump may be more inclined to strike Iran after the losses. Among the Democratic winners was Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed, an opponent of U.S. military aid to Israel.
