President Donald Trump said Tuesday night he would accept the midterm results and work with Democrats. He made the remarks in an interview with The New York Times.

“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” Trump said. “We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out.”

Watching Results at the White House

Trump spoke to the Times shortly before 10:30 p.m. ET while watching returns at the White House. He blamed Republican losses on the fact that he was not on the ballot.

He said he had no regrets about endorsing Sen. Darline Graham of South Carolina or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Graham lost her race. Paxton was trailing in his Senate bid at the time, the Times reported.

“I see that Darline lost. Wow, that’s amazing,” Trump said as he watched.

Democrats Appear Poised to Take Congress

Democrats are projected to win the House. The Times’ live forecast showed them favored to win the Senate, though a final call may not come for hours.

The tone differs from his remarks to CBS News earlier on Election Day. He said then he would use his veto and “tremendous powers” if Democrats took Congress.

Before the vote, Trump had said he would accept the results “if they’re honest elections.”
