U.S. President Donald Trump described his meeting with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney at the APEC Summit as “very positive.” The encounter came during a period of growing trade friction between Washington and Ottawa following the airing of a politically charged advertisement by the Ontario provincial government that criticized U.S. customs policies.
Trump: The Ad Was Totally Fake
According to Trump, Carney apologized for the ad, which the U.S. president claimed was misleading and unfair.
He apologized for the ad because it was totally fake. Ronald Reagan supported tariffs, but they tried to make it look like the opposite.
The advertisement reportedly distorted remarks made by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan regarding tariffs, suggesting that he opposed such measures — a claim Trump labeled as “false propaganda.”
U.S. Retaliation and Halted Trade Talks
Following the broadcast of the ad, Trump responded by announcing the suspension of all trade negotiations with Canada and an increase in tariff rates by 10%.
When asked whether discussions would resume, Trump replied, “No, but I get along very well with Carney. I really like him.”
Carney had previously stated that Canada was open to restarting talks on trade and tariffs with the United States.
