U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday pledged American support for India in the event of an attack, underscoring deeply personalized ties with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking on the relationship between Washington and New Delhi, Trump stated that the U.S. would intervene to assist India if the nation faced an assault.
The U.S. president explicitly tied this security commitment to his relationship with Modi.
"If anybody attacks that man, we're going to be there," Trump said. He added he was unsure if the same guarantee would apply under a different Indian leader.
Bilateral Ties And Trade Negotiations
Trump emphasized the strength of his personal connection with the Indian prime minister, describing him as a long-time friend.
He noted that the two nations could not be closer, attributing this dynamic directly to their individual rapport.
Addressing ongoing economic discussions, Trump indicated that a U.S.-India trade agreement is imminent.
He characterized Modi as a formidable counterpart in talks, calling him a "very tough negotiator."
In remarks detailing Modi's demeanor, Trump contrasted the prime minister's appearance with his political disposition.
He described Modi as "as tough as a killer," while noting his outward presentation takes people by surprise.
The U.S. president also confirmed plans to visit India in the future.
“We Won the War in the First Week”
Beyond U.S.-India relations, Trump addressed an array of international security issues.
On the conflict with Iran, he claimed the U.S. achieved military victory in the first week of the war.
When questioned about the Strait of Hormuz, Trump dismissed the need for European minesweepers but said he would not oppose their deployment.
Regarding Israel's military campaign, Trump stated he wants the country to be able to protect itself, while adding a request for them to use good judgment.
Russia, Ukraine, And Venezuela
Trump declined to comment on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is responsible for the war in Ukraine, citing ongoing efforts to broker a deal.
He confirmed the U.S. is evaluating the reimposition of sanctions on Russia, linking the decision to falling oil prices.
Addressing requests from Kyiv to manufacture American missiles in Ukraine, Trump stated his administration would review the proposal.
Furthermore, Trump claimed the U.S. has recouped the financial costs of conflict in Venezuela by extracting millions of barrels of oil. He stated both nations are benefiting from the arrangement.
