President Donald Trump said Friday that Iran has not agreed to international nuclear inspections or to end uranium enrichment, casting doubt on the prospects for near-term diplomatic engagement and nuclear containment.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump stated: “I would say [Iran’s program is] set back permanently. I would think they'd have to start at a different location. And if they did start, it would be a problem.” He added that Iran still wants to meet, but he would not allow the nuclear program to resume.
The remarks come as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed it had withdrawn its last inspectors from Iran following a U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign that targeted three key enrichment sites in June.
Tehran Suspends Cooperation With IAEA
Iran’s parliament recently passed a law suspending cooperation with the IAEA until safety at its nuclear facilities can be guaranteed. Tehran accuses the UN agency of contributing to the June attacks by issuing a critical report in May that led to a Board of Governors resolution against Iran.
While the IAEA says Iran has yet to officially communicate the suspension, access to facilities remains frozen. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has said restoring inspections is his “top priority.”
Nuclear Material Missing or Undocumented
U.S. and Israeli strikes reportedly destroyed or damaged Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan enrichment sites. However, questions remain over the fate of Iran’s stockpile—especially over 400 kg of uranium enriched to 60%, a short step from weapons-grade. Much of it is unaccounted for.
Iran insists its program is peaceful. The U.S. and Israel maintain Tehran is aiming for nuclear weapons capability.
Trump confirmed that he will discuss Iran with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his upcoming White House visit on Monday. With inspections blocked and trust eroding, the path forward remains highly uncertain.
