Trump: "If Iran Misbehaves, We Go Right Back to Dropping Bombs"

US President Donald Trump warned Iran that the current deal is only a memorandum of understanding, and that military strikes would resume if Tehran misbehaves, as he denied reports of a $300 billion fund for Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a blunt warning to Iran at the G7 summit in France, making clear that the current agreement is provisional and that military action remains on the table if Tehran steps out of line.

"The text is not final; it's a memorandum of understanding," Trump said, before adding, "If I don't like it, we will go back to dropping bombs on their heads. If they don't behave, we will go right back to dropping bombs."

A Deal With Conditions and a Threat Built In

Trump was unambiguous that the agreement carries no guarantees.

He described the document as preliminary while defending its significance, saying: "Nobody knows what it is, but it is a very strong deal. Most people seem to be very happy."

"The alternative would be a worldwide depression," Trump said. "Stupid people want to have a worldwide depression. They are stupid people. Number one, the strait would never open."

When a reporter raised claims that the deal includes a $300 billion fund for Iran, Trump pushed back directly.

"No, it's false. We are not investing. People can decide to do that, but it's up to them," he said, adding, "Do you want me to say that nobody is ever allowed to invest in a country?"

The Navy Operations Nobody Knew About

Trump revealed what he described as a covert U.S. naval campaign that he credited with keeping global oil prices from spiraling.

"The reason oil stayed low is because we were taking ships out every night that you didn't even know about," he said.

He claimed that 2 to 3 days before his remarks, and as recently as a month prior, the U.S. took out 22 ships in a single operation, with nightly figures averaging between 15 and 25 ships.

"Nobody knew what was happening. That's why oil didn't go to $300 a barrel; it went to $125, $150. Now it's at $72, $73," he said.

Soleimani, Obama, and a Long List of Predecessors

Trump invoked the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani as a prerequisite for the current diplomatic opening.

"We took out a man named Soleimani. Do you think this would have happened if he were alive? He was an evil genius," Trump said.

He also took aim at a long line of predecessors, saying the Iran operations "should have been done by Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama. This should have been done by Biden, Bush, and a lot of other people."

On Iran's attitude toward Obama specifically, Trump claimed: "The Iranians laughed at Obama, and they said, 'He is a stupid son of a b*tch.'"

Trump added: "Don't forget, there's never been anybody who has been so tough on Iran."

Sisi at the G7 and the Nile Dispute

Trump also addressed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi by praising him and weighing in on a regional water dispute.

"He is respected all over the world, including by me," Trump said of Sisi.

Trump said the U.S. is helping Sisi with a dam project and took Egypt's side in its long-running dispute with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

"The Nile River is getting a little emptier than it should be. A dam was built in Ethiopia, and it is causing tremendous problems for Egypt. I think Egypt was treated very unfairly by Ethiopia," Trump said.

Sisi, for his part, offered effusive praise of his own.

"I observed during the dinner last night that you were surrounded by all the world leaders. They didn't leave you a moment to enjoy your dinner," Sisi told Trump.

"I cannot overemphasize how much respect I have for you."
