“Trump feels misled (on the Iran war) — he was misled,” one Trump adviser told CNN. “And somebody should pay for that.” The adviser was not named.
CNN reported that Trump has privately vented that the war badly damaged his party’s midterm chances. On Wednesday, he publicly called it “largely true” that the war cost Republicans.
Hegseth Seen as Vulnerable
Some Trump allies expect him to find someone to take the blame now that the campaign is over, CNN said. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a proponent of the war, is seen by some allies as potentially vulnerable.
Trump has asked allies for their views on Hegseth’s recent performance, according to CNN. CBS News separately reported that Trump asked advisers whether Hegseth should stay.
No Shake-Up Planned, Trump Says
Trump told Fox News on Tuesday he was not considering a Cabinet shake-up. Another member of his circle said Trump believes Hegseth should fight potential impeachment proceedings.
Trump has defended Hegseth, calling him a “great warrior.” CNN said it is unclear whether Trump would change his team before the Iran conflict ends.
