Trump has been asking advisers whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should stay, CBS News reported, citing multiple sources. The discussions follow Republicans’ heavy losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Trump has not made a decision on replacing Hegseth, according to CBS. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is being floated as a possible replacement, the outlet reported.
Iran War Blame
Some Trump allies have blamed the Iran war for the Republican defeat. The Daily Beast described Hegseth as a prominent driver of the eight-month conflict.
Trump defended him in a Wall Street Journal interview on Tuesday night. “I think he’s terrific actually,” Trump said, the Daily Beast noted.
Pressure From Capitol Hill
Republican Senator Thom Tillis told CBS that Hegseth “has a reckoning,” the Independent reported. Tillis called him “one of the reasons why we don’t have the funding” for defense.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told The Washington Post that Hegseth has no plans to step down. Hegseth has also faced criticism over his purge of senior officers, including the Army general Brett Sylvia.
