Thailand has accused Cambodia of violating a newly brokered ceasefire agreement for the second time in two days, claiming that Cambodian forces fired small arms and grenade launchers at Thai positions in Sisaket province near the northern border.

The ceasefire came into effect at midnight Monday following five days of intense cross-border clashes that left at least 43 dead and displaced over 300,000 civilians in the region. It was brokered in Malaysia with diplomatic support from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump, who had warned both sides that further fighting could trigger steep tariffs — up to 36% — on their exports to the American market.

“This was the second incident since the agreement and reflects a behaviour that does not respect agreements, destroys de-escalation efforts and hampers trust between the two countries,” Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree said at a briefing.

Cambodia Rejects Allegations, Urges Monitors

Cambodia flatly rejected the allegations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Chum Sounry called the accusations “false, misleading and harmful to the fragile trust-building process.” Phnom Penh reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire and urged the deployment of an international monitoring mechanism.

The truce also included an agreement to halt troop movements, yet no reports have emerged of any withdrawals on either side. Though no heavy artillery exchanges have occurred since the ceasefire, both militaries remain on high alert.

The next critical step will be a high-level military meeting between Thai and Cambodian defense ministers scheduled for August 4 in Cambodia. It is expected to address both the violations and the future of the fragile truce.
