In a rare diplomatic move, Syria and Israel are set to hold ministerial-level talks today in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, amid escalating violence in southern Syria. The meeting reflects growing urgency to prevent further regional destabilization following weeks of clashes and cross-border interventions.

Focus on Southern Syria

According to diplomatic sources, today's meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will center on the deteriorating security situation in southern Syria, particularly the Druze-majority Sweida province.

“The talks will address the recent security developments and explore ways to contain further escalation,” a diplomat told AFP.

The talks follow a previous meeting held in Paris earlier this month and come as part of broader efforts to manage the fallout from renewed fighting that has involved Druze fighters, Syrian forces, and Israeli airstrikes.

Russian Role and Geopolitical Dimensions

Before arriving in Baku, al-Shaibani visited Moscow for talks on Russia’s military presence in Syria, including the future of its Tartus naval base and Hmeimim airbase. Despite the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December, the new Syrian authorities have maintained close ties with Russia.

Russian officials have emphasized the need to preserve military influence in Syria, while also encouraging stability through diplomacy.

Longstanding Hostility Meets Tactical Dialogue

Israel and Syria remain technically at war, with Israel still occupying the Golan Heights since 1967. Despite this, indirect talks have increased in recent months, with both sides seeking to avoid full-scale confrontation.

The U.S., which brokered a ceasefire on July 18 between Israel and Syria, is reportedly supportive of today’s meeting as part of its broader regional de-escalation strategy.
