A Dagens Nyheter investigation found over 1,400 workouts linked to seven bodyguards assigned to government officials, revealing running and cycling routes around high-risk and private locations. These included Kristersson’s home, country residence in Harpsund, and international trips, such as a family holiday to Åland in October 2024 and a meeting in Bodø, Norway, with Nordic leaders.
The Strava logs also compromised the locations of other high-profile Swedes, including the royal family and former prime minister Magdalena Andersson. Global sites revealed include Tel Aviv’s seafront, military bases in Mali, and ski resorts in the Alps.
Security Response And Historical Context
Swedish security service Säpo confirmed it is treating the case “very seriously” and is investigating how the data could be exploited. “This is information that could be used to map the activities of the security service,” a Säpo spokesperson said, noting existing multi-layered protection protocols.
This is not the first time Strava has exposed critical information. In 2017, a global heat map revealed military and spy base activity. In 2023, a Russian ex-submarine commander was reportedly located via his public Strava data. The Swedish government declined comment, and Strava has yet to issue a response.
