Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced on Tuesday that the country will seek European Union sanctions against specific Israeli ministers, citing Israel's treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
"Since we do not see a clear improvement for the civilians in Gaza, we need to raise the tone further," Stenergard told AFP. "We will therefore now also push for EU sanctions against individual Israeli ministers."
Stockholm Urges EU Action Amid Escalation
The Swedish government has expressed growing concern over the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, signaling that diplomatic pressure alone is no longer sufficient. Stenergard confirmed that Stockholm intends to bring the issue to the EU level, where the proposed sanctions will be discussed with other member states.
While the names of the targeted ministers have not yet been disclosed, the move marks a significant escalation in Europe’s response to Israel’s Gaza campaign, as frustration mounts over civilian suffering and lack of progress in aid delivery.
