The Federal Government of Somalia has formally urged the dissolution of the C6+ coordination group, arguing the format no longer reflects the country’s political maturity and aspirations for equal bilateral partnerships.

C6+ Format Deemed “Outdated” by Mogadishu

Established 15 years ago during Somalia’s transitional phase, the C6+ group played a key role in coordinating international support. However, Somali officials now say the continued existence of the framework gives a “misleading impression” that Somalia remains under external supervision.

In a formal statement, Mogadishu emphasized that the country has made significant institutional progress and now aims to define its international relationships on “equal and respectful” terms.

Path Toward Sovereign Diplomacy

The Somali government considers the group—comprising the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, African Union, United Nations, IGAD, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sweden—out of step with Somalia’s current governance capacity and ambitions.

As part of this diplomatic shift, Somalia is expected to pursue new bilateral agreements with its key international partners, prioritizing mutual respect and national sovereignty in future engagements.
