Somalia Calls For Long-Term AU Mission Funding

The Somali government has renewed its appeal for stable, long-term funding for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), emphasizing the critical role the mission plays in national stabilization. Speaking at a virtual African Union Peace and Security Council session, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar called for increased financial commitment from AU member states and international donors.

Minister Omar proposed convening a dedicated AUSSOM Financing Conference hosted by a Gulf partner country, aimed at securing long-term support and improving financial transparency. He highlighted the importance of African countries contributing more robustly through the AU Peace Fund, stating, “Greater African ownership will not only inspire international confidence but also ensure the success of AUSSOM—currently the largest peace operation on the continent.”

The United Nations still needs $41.6 million in extra-budgetary contributions to maintain AUSSOM, which succeeded the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in 2025. The mission’s initial budget of $190.2 million was later reduced to $166.5 million after the AU decided to keep troop compensation at $828 per month instead of raising it to $1,000.

Minister Omar also expressed condolences for the loss of five Ugandan peacekeepers in a helicopter crash in Mogadishu on 2 July. “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” he stated, acknowledging the ongoing risks peacekeepers face on the ground.
