Security forces in southern Somalia launched a coordinated offensive on June 25, targeting key Al-Shabaab positions in the Lower Juba region. The operation, involving Jubaland regional forces, the U.S.-trained Danab special forces, and the Somali National Army’s 56th Battalion, focused on areas along the Jubba River.

According to official statements, the operation covered Malaaleey, Araare, Koban, Janaale Jay, and Reeynero—areas believed to be strongholds for Al-Shabaab. Authorities said the offensive resulted in the destruction of several hideouts and the deaths of numerous fighters, though independent verification remains pending.

Military Campaign Expands in Rural South

The offensive is part of a broader campaign by Somali and Jubaland forces aimed at reclaiming territory from Al-Shabaab. The group's entrenched presence in Middle and Lower Juba, as well as parts of Gedo, remains a key challenge, with fighters continuing to launch attacks on security forces and civilians.

ATMIS and Kenya's Role

While rural conflict persists, stability in southern Somalia's urban centers is being maintained through support from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Kenyan Defence Forces stationed in the region are working alongside Jubaland forces to secure cities like Kismayo, Afmadow, and Dhobley.
