According to Ugandan military spokesperson Felix Kulayigye, the clash began when South Sudanese People's Defence Forces (SSPDF) personnel entered Ugandan territory and refused to withdraw when ordered. The ensuing firefight resulted in fatalities on both sides. A statement from Kajo Keji county accused Ugandan troops of launching a surprise assault with heavy equipment, leading to the deaths of five SSPDF soldiers.
South Sudan’s army acknowledged the skirmish but did not confirm casualty figures. Both nations maintain a joint border committee to manage recurring disputes in the region and are now expected to seek de-escalation through diplomatic channels.
Longstanding Ties Strained By Local Tensions
Uganda has historically supported the government of President Salva Kiir, providing military backing during South Sudan’s independence struggle and later during its civil conflict. However, localized clashes along the border remain frequent due to unresolved demarcations.
In March 2025, South Sudan had even invited Ugandan forces to help stabilize Juba amid political tensions between President Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar. The recent incident comes despite this collaboration, underscoring the fragility of military relations when local disputes flare.
The border tensions have emerged as both countries navigate complex security and political environments, with renewed efforts likely needed to prevent escalation and avoid future loss of life.
