Russia Claims Ukraine Targeted Putin’s Residence

Russia’s foreign minister framed an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian president’s state residence as a turning point in Moscow’s political and military posture, signaling both retaliation and a reassessment of diplomacy.

Speaking on December 29, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Kyiv had crossed a threshold by attempting to strike what he described as a protected state facility in the Novgorod region.

The incident, according to Lavrov, unfolded overnight into December 29 and involved a large-scale unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operation directed at a residence associated with President Vladimir Putin.

Lavrov stated that Kyiv attempted to attack the residence with 91 UAVs, all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defenses.

No damage or casualties were cited.

The claim was presented as evidence of what he called the “Kyiv regime’s” definitive move toward “a policy of state terrorism,” language that elevates the incident beyond a tactical military episode into a doctrinal accusation.

Lavrov said Russia’s negotiating position would be revised accordingly, linking diplomacy directly to the alleged attack.

“We Will Not Withdraw”

Despite the sharp rhetoric, Lavrov emphasized that Moscow does not intend to abandon talks outright.

“Russia does not intend to withdraw from the negotiation process after the attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the state residence,” he said.

Lavrov also said that “the targets and timing of Russia’s retaliatory strike following the attack on Putin’s state residence have been determined,” indicating that a response has already been planned.

He did not provide dates, locations, or the types of weapons involved, nor did he state whether such action had already been carried out as of December 29.
