Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced his resignation on Tuesday as the Member of Parliament for Clacton, forcing a by-election amid escalating parliamentary investigations into his personal finances.

Farage confirmed he intends to contest the subsequent vote, framing the upcoming ballot as a confrontation between the public and the political establishment.

Investigation and Crypto Funding

The resignation follows an official inquiry launched in mid-May by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.

The investigation centers on an undeclared £5 million gift received in 2024 from Christopher Harborne, a British-Thai cryptocurrency billionaire.

Farage has maintained that the funds were non-political in nature and required no formal declaration.

However, public scrutiny has intensified as the Reform UK leader provided conflicting explanations for the money.

Farage initially stated that the capital was allocated for his personal security, but later characterized it as a reward for his leadership during the Brexit referendum campaign.

He subsequently described the finances as an unconditional gift that he could spend at his own discretion.

Criminal Funding Allegations

The political pressure increased following a Sunday Times report detailing additional funding from George Cottrell, a convicted criminal.

Farage rejected the allegations upon returning from a U.S. trip marking the nation's 250th anniversary.

Confronted by reporters, the Reform UK leader reacted with hostility and warned of consequences for media leadership.

He maintained he committed no errors, attributing the reports to a mainstream media campaign designed to undermine his party.

Wider British Political Turmoil

Farage's resignation adds to a volatile British political landscape following the announcement of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's departure.

Starmer resigned in June following poor local election results for the Labour Party in May, remaining in office until a successor is chosen.

Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is widely expected to assume the premiership.

Burnham recently secured 55 percent of the vote in the Makerfield by-election, defeating candidates from both Reform UK and the Restore Britain party.
