Protesters gathered in central Tunis on March 7, 2026, demonstrating against the United States and Israel’s military campaign against Iran and expressing solidarity with the Iranian and Palestinian people amid the escalating Middle East conflict.
The protest took place along Habib Bourguiba Avenue, the Tunisian capital’s main boulevard and a traditional focal point for political demonstrations. Participants carried Iranian, Palestinian and Tunisian flags, along with portraits of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader killed in recent U.S.-Israeli strikes.
The rally remained peaceful as demonstrators marched through the city center and voiced opposition to the ongoing conflict, which began following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28. The strikes triggered retaliatory Iranian attacks against Israel and U.S. military bases located in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
The Tunis demonstration forms part of a broader wave of anti-war protests taking place in several global cities. Similar demonstrations were reported outside the White House in Washington, in San Francisco, and in Mexico City.
Participants in the Tunis rally said their demonstration aimed to condemn what they viewed as external aggression against Iran and to express support for the Iranian population during the conflict.
One protester told AFP, “The region has become a real hell. Under these conditions, Iran has no choice but to defend itself.”
Some demonstrators also carried images of regional figures including Hezbollah’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.
The protests unfolded against the backdrop of Tunisia’s official diplomatic position regarding the conflict. In a statement issued on March 1, Tunisia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ministry said Tunisia expressed “absolute rejection of any attack against the territories of brotherly Arab states.”
However, the statement did not explicitly name the parties responsible for the attacks, referring generally to violations of state sovereignty without directly identifying either the United States and Israel or Iran.
The demonstration in central Tunis also comes as Tunisian authorities have detained pro-Palestinian activists linked to a planned Gaza aid flotilla and opened a financial investigation into donation funds associated with the campaign.
Public demonstrations in Tunisia highlight how the conflict is resonating politically beyond the immediate battlefield, particularly in countries where public opinion has historically been sympathetic to Palestinian and regional resistance movements.
Despite the charged political context, the Tunis rally remained peaceful, with participants calling for an end to hostilities and expressing solidarity with populations affected by the fighting.
