Nepal has lifted a sweeping ban on major social media platforms in the wake of violent nationwide protests, where security forces shot and killed at least 19 young demonstrators. The demonstrations, largely led by Generation Z activists, erupted over perceived censorship and systemic corruption, prompting the government to reverse course as international alarm grew.

Sparked by Censorship, Fueled by Corruption

What began as restrictions on social media access quickly transformed into mass unrest. The government had blocked platforms like Facebook and YouTube, stating they had failed to register under new regulations designed to regulate misinformation and online crime.

But protesters saw the ban as a thinly veiled attempt at censorship. Students and young activists chanted slogans such as “Shut down corruption, not social media” and “Youths against corruption”, underscoring that the ban was merely the match igniting wider frustrations with political impunity and lack of opportunity.

Violent Crackdown and Political Fallout

Protesters attempted to storm the parliament complex in Kathmandu, escalating clashes across cities. Security forces deployed tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition—resulting in at least 19 deaths and dozens of injuries, including among police.

Reports confirmed the use of live fire from police, which prompted widespread alarm among rights groups. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, and the government declared it would compensate victims’ families and review its response.

Ban Reversed, Curfew Imposed

Facing fierce backlash, the government rescinded the ban within a day. A cabinet spokesperson confirmed that services were restored by Tuesday morning. However, order remained fragile. A state of curfew was imposed in Kathmandu and other cities, accompanied by school closures and the continued presence of troops.

Generational Divide and Governance Crisis

Observers point to a deeper governance failure. The protests mark a watershed moment in Nepal, highlighting a frustrated generation increasingly alienated from a political elite perceived as unresponsive.
