Mélenchon Pledges French Naval Escorts for Citizen Flotillas if Necessary

Jean-Luc Mélenchon says French ships would, if necessary, escort civilian flotillas if he wins in 2027. The LFI candidate made the pledge at a Le Bourget rally.

French presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon told supporters at Le Bourget on Saturday that French ships would escort citizen flotillas if that became necessary, presenting the idea as future policy if he wins in 2027.

Speaking at La France Insoumise’s meeting at the Parc des Expositions in Le Bourget, north of Paris, on November 7, the LFI leader framed the commitment as a matter of last resort.

A Conditional Escort Pledge

“Les navires français, s’il le fallait, escorteront les flottilles de citoyens mobilisés pour faire valoir leurs droits,” Mélenchon wrote in an official post on X accompanying the speech.

In English: “French ships, if necessary, will escort the flotillas of citizens mobilized to assert their rights.”

In the speech clip published by Clash Report, the English translation adds a comparison absent from his written post: French ships, “like those of Italy and Spain,” would carry out the escorts.

“Act Directly” for Palestinians

Mélenchon also promised to intervene on the Palestinians’ behalf, using his own characterizations of events in the occupied territories.

“Nous agirons frontalement au secours des Palestiniens, à la fois contre le génocide à Gaza et contre l’annexion progressive de la Cisjordanie,” his post read. That translates as: “We will act directly to come to the aid of the Palestinians, against both the genocide in Gaza and the progressive annexation of the West Bank.”

BFMTV, which aired the remarks from Le Bourget, presented the commitment as contingent on his winning the presidential election.

A Candidate, Not a Government

Mélenchon holds no executive office. The pledge is a campaign promise for the 2027 race, not French government policy, and no naval deployment has been ordered.

The Le Bourget meeting marked the public presentation of LFI’s 2027 presidential program, L’Avenir en commun.

The Italian and Spanish Precedent

The reference to Italy and Spain points to September 2025, when both countries sent naval vessels to assist a Gaza-bound civilian flotilla after reported drone attacks off Greece.

Those missions were limited. Reuters reported the deployments were made without any intention to engage militarily, and Italy said its frigate would stop 150 nautical miles from Gaza’s shore.

Neither country committed to an open-ended military escort through to Gaza.
