Malaysian authorities have broken up a covert network of Bangladeshi migrant workers accused of raising funds and spreading Islamic State ideology in one of the country’s largest anti-terror operations in recent years.
Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police, Mohd Khalid Ismail, revealed Friday that security forces had conducted multiple operations since April, resulting in the detention of 36 Bangladeshi nationals. These individuals, employed mostly in factories, construction, and service sectors, were allegedly part of a clandestine network that targeted fellow migrant workers for recruitment.
Police said the group operated primarily online, using social media and encrypted messaging apps to disseminate radical content and mobilize support.
Funding Routed to Syria and Bangladesh
According to intelligence reports, the network also raised funds for Islamic State-linked activities, transferring money via e-wallets and international remittance services to destinations in Syria and Bangladesh. Authorities did not disclose the amount raised but indicated that financial tracking is ongoing.
Of those detained:
- 5 have been charged under anti-terror laws,
 - 15 are being deported due to minimal involvement,
 - 16 remain in custody pending investigation.

Officials estimate that 100 to 150 individuals may be linked to the operation, suggesting that further arrests are likely.
Crackdown Follows Years of Security Focus
Although Malaysia has largely subdued militant threats following a high-profile 2016 IS-linked attack in Kuala Lumpur, this case underscores the persistent risk of sleeper cells and digital radicalization, particularly among vulnerable foreign labor populations.
“We will deport those with minimal involvement and prosecute those with stronger ties under Malaysian law,” Khalid said during a televised press conference.
