In a statement released Saturday, Macron urged the EU to “resolutely defend its interests” by speeding up work on countermeasures. “All instruments must be on the table, including anti-coercion tools,” he said, warning that Washington’s tariffs must not go unanswered if no agreement is reached by August 1.
The French president's remarks reflect a broader frustration within the EU, where several member states—including Germany and Italy—have already called for intensified diplomatic engagement to avoid a full-blown trade war. However, Macron’s message signaled a willingness to escalate if the U.S. remains inflexible.
U.S.-EU Trade Relations At A Crossroads
The Biden administration had previously worked to de-escalate transatlantic trade tensions, but Trump’s return to office has shifted the tone. The tariffs, imposed despite ongoing talks, have drawn criticism from EU leaders who feel blindsided by the unilateral move.
Macron emphasized that France stands behind the European Commission, which continues to lead negotiations with Washington. The outcome of these talks could shape the trajectory of U.S.-EU relations for years to come, with economic and political stakes growing as the August deadline approaches.
