Corneille Nangaa, leader of the M23 movement, has cautiously welcomed the peace agreement signed between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the United States. In a video statement, Nangaa called the deal “limited but useful,” suggesting that while it represents progress, it does not fully address the complexities of the conflict.
Broader Engagement Still Required
Nangaa stressed that any sustainable solution would need to involve a wider range of actors, particularly those active in eastern DRC. He pointed to the ongoing violence in North Kivu and the persistent grievances of affected communities as evidence that bilateral agreements alone are insufficient to bring lasting peace.
Conflict Continues in Eastern Congo
Despite international efforts to de-escalate tensions, clashes between M23 and Congolese forces have persisted. The group maintains control over several strategic locations, and humanitarian conditions continue to worsen in the region.
