Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives, aligned with General Khalifa Haftar, has set up a committee to review the controversial maritime agreement signed with Türkiye in 2019, a move that may lead to its approval after years of rejection.
The Tobruk-based House of Representatives announced on Monday that a technical committee will examine the maritime demarcation deal signed by the former Government of National Accord (GNA) with Türkiye. The agreement, followed by a 2022 memorandum granting Ankara exploration rights, has been condemned by Greece and considered legally void by much of the international community.
Until now, Libya’s eastern authorities had rejected both deals as illegitimate. The decision to revisit the agreement marks a shift in tone and possibly in policy.
