Iran has signalled cautious optimism before renewed negotiations with the United States, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that a breakthrough agreement is achievable if diplomatic efforts are given precedence.
The comments come as indirect discussions between Tehran and Washington are set to resume in Geneva, against the backdrop of heightened military activity in the Middle East and renewed warnings from US President Donald Trump.
Tehran Signals Openness to Agreement
In a statement shared on social media, Araghchi described the current moment as a “historic opportunity” to secure an unprecedented accord, stressing that progress hinges on diplomacy taking priority over threats of force.
He reiterated that Iran remains unequivocal in its position that it will “under no circumstances” develop a nuclear weapon, while maintaining that the country has the right to benefit from peaceful nuclear technology.
The upcoming meeting in Geneva will mark the third round of indirect talks between the two sides. The negotiations are being facilitated by Oman, which has expressed hope that the parties will make an extra effort to finalise an agreement.
“Diplomacy Preferred, But Force Not Ruled Out”
Speaking during his State of the Union address in Washington, DC, Trump adopted a firm tone toward Tehran. While stating that a diplomatic solution remains his preference, he accused Iran of advancing missile capabilities that could eventually threaten the United States.
Trump said he would not allow what he described as the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism to acquire nuclear weapons. He also referenced the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, asserting that Tehran had been warned against rebuilding its weapons programme.
According to Trump, Iran is attempting to revive elements of its nuclear activities, despite ongoing negotiations. He added that Washington has yet to hear an explicit declaration from Tehran renouncing nuclear weapons ambitions.
