Iran’s judiciary reported Monday that 935 people, including 38 children and 132 women, were killed during Israel’s 12-day air offensive — the deadliest confrontation between the two countries in decades.
Civilian Toll Surges After Ceasefire
The newly confirmed death toll marks a sharp rise from earlier reports, which had estimated 610 deaths before a ceasefire came into effect on June 25. Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir revealed that 79 people were killed in Israel’s strike on Tehran’s Evin Prison, up from a previous count of 71.
Israel launched the air war on June 13, targeting nuclear facilities and high-ranking military officials. The strikes have been described as the most severe blow to the Islamic Republic since the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.Iran Accuses Israel of War Crimes
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the strikes as “acts of aggression” and alleged that Israel deliberately targeted civilians. “We do not believe in separating military and civilian [victims],” Baghaei stated. “Any martyr or destroyed building is an example of war crimes.”
He added that Iran would submit evidence of Israeli violations to international organizations and called on global institutions to hold Israel accountable.
Broader Conflict and U.S. Involvement
In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at Israeli military bases, infrastructure, and urban centers. The United States entered the conflict on June 22, joining Israel in striking Iranian nuclear sites, adding to the escalation.
The conflict drew global concern due to the proximity of attacks to critical nuclear infrastructure and the risk of a wider regional war. Although a ceasefire has since held, the fallout continues to reshape regional diplomacy and legal discourse.
War Timeline and Impact
The Israel-Iran war began after an unprecedented Israeli air campaign targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and commanders on June 13. Iran responded with mass missile launches. The U.S. joined the conflict days later, marking a rare direct military intervention.
With the official Iranian civilian toll now nearing 1,000 and infrastructure damage widespread, Tehran’s leadership is seeking legal recourse — and moral vindication — on the international stage.
