Three Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) personnel were killed on Tuesday after their patrol vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) on a road between Sankuri and Kiunga, a coastal area near the Somali border. While al-Shabaab claimed at least two soldiers were killed and others injured, the group stopped short of claiming direct responsibility. Kenyan military officials described the deceased as “gallant soldiers” who made the “ultimate sacrifice,” as cross-border violence continues to threaten the region.
Rising Threats From Al-Shabaab In Border Areas
According to the Kenyan military’s official statement, the explosion occurred during a routine patrol near Kiunga, approximately 12 kilometers from the Somali frontier. The area is known for frequent militant incursions by al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked group that controls much of southern and central Somalia.
Security analysts say the group’s cross-border attacks are aimed at pressuring Kenya to withdraw its forces from the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The Kenyan military remains a key contributor to ATMIS operations against al-Shabaab strongholds.
Al-Shabaab Escalation Renews Regional Concerns
Although the militant group did not explicitly claim the latest incident, it often targets Kenyan patrols in Lamu and Garissa counties using roadside IEDs. Previous attacks in the region have led to both military and civilian casualties, as well as increased security operations.
Observers warn that as ATMIS phases out, al-Shabaab may seek to exploit perceived security gaps along border areas. The Kenyan government has pledged to continue reinforcing its defenses, especially in Lamu County, where attacks have disrupted local development and displaced communities.
