An Israeli airstrike on Sanaa has killed Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled government in Yemen, alongside several other cabinet ministers, officials confirmed. The strike, which targeted a leadership gathering during a routine government workshop, marks a major escalation in the conflict between Israel and the Iran-supported insurgent group. The Houthi leadership has since vowed intensified attacks against Israeli and maritime targets.
Targeted Leadership Strike in Sanaa
The strike struck as senior officials gathered at an apartment or villa in Sanaa to view a prerecorded speech by Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. The operation, characterized by the Israeli military as relying on precision intelligence and air superiority, resulted in multiple casualties, including ministers responsible for foreign affairs, energy, and information. Ahmed al-Rahawi, who assumed office in August 2024 and was seen as a largely symbolic leader, was replaced by his deputy, Mohamed Moftah, following his death.
Symbolic Blow, Strategic Signal
Israel’s targeting of Houthi leadership rather than infrastructure reflects a heightened approach to neutralize command elements. While al-Rahawi lacked direct military influence, analysts see the strike as an effort to undermine the group’s leadership cohesiveness and deter further strikes against Israeli targets. The scope of the casualties—including other key ministers—suggests a broader operational impact on the governance of the Houthi administration.
Houthi Retaliation and Escalating Conflict
In response, the Houthis vowed to intensify their campaign of drone, missile, and naval assaults on Israel and Red Sea maritime traffic. Their previous operations have already significantly disrupted global shipping lanes, forcing rerouting and raising insurance and logistic costs. The latest strike is expected to amplify their attacks in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
