Sheikh Naim Qassem, Hezbollah’s leader, firmly rejected renewed calls for the group’s disarmament, declaring in a key speech that Hezbollah would not hand over its weapons “now or in the future.” The statement comes amid heightened diplomatic activity, with the U.S. reportedly proposing deals that link border security, reconstruction aid, and Hezbollah’s disarmament. Qassem’s remarks underline the group’s position that its arms are a core component of Lebanon’s defense strategy and are not subject to foreign negotiation.
Hezbollah’s Clear Red Line
Speaking during a politically sensitive period, Qassem made clear that Hezbollah’s weapons are not up for discussion within the framework of any international or regional negotiations. He stressed that such matters are to be addressed only internally in Lebanon and only after Israel fully complies with its obligations, including a complete withdrawal from occupied territories.
Qassem’s comments are seen as a response to recent U.S. initiatives, particularly a proposal reportedly presented by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, which sought to combine border arrangements, disarmament, and reconstruction into a single settlement package. The speech also served as a message to Lebanese factions hoping that regional diplomacy might lead to Hezbollah’s demilitarization.
Impact on Diplomatic Efforts
Analysts say Qassem’s unequivocal stance could derail international attempts to broker a broader Middle East settlement involving Lebanon. While some official Lebanese circles have given cautious support to U.S. mediation efforts, Hezbollah’s rejection of any link between ceasefires and disarmament significantly reduces the prospects of success.
Qassem emphasized that any international initiative failing to respect Hezbollah’s position on arms is doomed to fail, regardless of its diplomatic or economic incentives.
