German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on June 12 for high-level discussions on military aid, reaffirming Berlin’s commitment to arming Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion.

Pistorius: “Everything We Can” for Ukraine’s Defense

According to DPA and Reuters, Pistorius held talks with Ukrainian officials to discuss future German weapons deliveries. “We are doing everything we can to support Ukraine so that it can defend itself and get into a position where Russia is prepared to enter into serious negotiations,” Pistorius said ahead of his visit.

The German Defense Ministry has not disclosed further details of the aid package.

Berlin Steps Up as U.S. Commitment Wavers

With the United States’ support for Ukraine facing increasing scrutiny, Germany has taken a more prominent role. It is now Kyiv’s second-largest arms supplier and recently approved the use of long-range weapons provided by Berlin and other allies.

This policy shift, announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, drew condemnation from Moscow, which accused Germany of escalating the conflict.

Peace Talks Resume in Parallel

While fighting continues on the ground, Russia and Ukraine resumed negotiations in Istanbul earlier this month. However, the sides remain far apart on core issues such as territory and NATO aspirations.

Germany has positioned itself as a central player in both military and diplomatic efforts.
