Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck urged a level-headed response to the U.S. tariff announcement, stating that a “pragmatic” approach is essential to prevent a major economic rift between the long-time allies. “We must prioritize dialogue and avoid further escalation,” Habeck said, adding that continued engagement with Washington remains the best path forward.

Italy echoed the sentiment, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office stating it is “crucial to remain focused on the negotiations” to prevent the situation from devolving into deeper economic conflict. Rome also highlighted the dangers of allowing political polarization to derail discussions between Brussels and Washington.

The Dutch government has aligned itself with the joint call for unity, voicing full support for the European Commission’s leadership in managing the EU’s response.

France Urges Preparedness For Retaliation

In contrast to Germany and Italy’s emphasis on diplomacy, French President Emmanuel Macron has taken a firmer position. Macron urged the EU to prepare for possible countermeasures if talks with the U.S. prove unsuccessful. “We cannot rule out strong responses if our efforts at diplomacy are ignored,” Macron said.

The tariffs, set to take effect on August 1, could have significant implications for EU industries and transatlantic trade. European officials remain committed to negotiating up until the deadline but are also weighing legal and economic tools should retaliation become necessary.
