Berlin confirmed that discussions will cover Gaza, migration management, and Türkiye’s relations with the European Union. The visit marks Merz’s first official trip to Ankara since taking office and highlights the strategic weight of Türkiye–Germany ties.

Two-Day Ankara Program

Government spokesperson Wolfgang Büchner said Merz will arrive in Türkiye on Oct. 29 and hold an official meeting with President Erdoğan on Oct. 30 in Ankara. The agenda includes bilateral relations, defense and security cooperation, migration, and the Gaza humanitarian crisis. A joint press conference will follow the meeting.

"Türkiye Is an Especially Important Neighbor"

Berlin described the visit as part of efforts to “make further progress in EU–Türkiye relations.” Deputy government spokesperson Christiane Hille underlined that “Türkiye is a valuable country and an especially important neighbor of the European Union,” adding that Ankara also plays “a significant role within NATO.”

Gaza and Regional Files

Officials said Gaza will be a key focus, with both sides expected to discuss cease-fire efforts and humanitarian access. Broader regional issues—including the wars in Syria and Ukraine—are also on the table, along with cooperation in counter-terrorism and energy.

People-to-People and Economic Ties

Berlin emphasized that nearly 3 million people of Turkish origin live in Germany, anchoring close social and economic relations. Türkiye remains one of Germany’s top trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding €50 billion in 2024. Merz’s Ankara stop follows his participation in the European Council meeting on Oct. 23, reflecting Berlin’s intent to sustain direct dialogue with key regional actors.
