The G7 foreign ministers issued a joint statement urging Iran to re-engage fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), amid rising concerns over Tehran’s nuclear transparency and regional stability.

The call comes just days after Iran’s parliament passed legislation suspending cooperation with the IAEA. Iranian officials have accused the agency of providing political cover for Israeli attacks on nuclear sites, following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes.

IAEA Access and Verification in Jeopardy

The IAEA warned last week that its inspectors must be allowed to continue their verification work in Iran. The agency emphasized that preventing access could severely undermine monitoring of nuclear material and proliferation risks.

In response, Iranian authorities sharply criticized IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, accusing him of bias and failure to protect Iran’s sovereign rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Broader Diplomatic Context

This latest G7 push follows a string of high-profile geopolitical shifts: U.S. President Trump recently lifted major sanctions on Syria, while simultaneously pursuing ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas and preliminary negotiations between Israel and Syria. Iran remains a central actor in all three theaters.

The G7’s call signals continued Western alignment on containing Iran’s nuclear ambitions while engaging diplomatically across the region’s overlapping crises.
