In South Korea, former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s brief attempt to impose martial law triggered a political crisis, leading to intensified investigations. Former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and former intelligence chief Cho Tae-yong have now been taken into custody in connection with the attempt.

Reason for Detention and Charges

Hwang Kyo-ahn reportedly posted on social media after the martial law announcement, calling for the arrest of the National Assembly Speaker and the removal of individuals allegedly involved in election fraud. Prosecutors are investigating Hwang for inciting rebellion.

Former NIS Chief Cho is accused of knowing about the martial law plans but failing to report them to the relevant authorities. The NIS Act requires the agency’s head to report situations that could significantly affect national security to the National Assembly and the president. Cho has denied all charges.

Investigations Into Yoon Suk-yeol

The detentions of Hwang and Cho follow the expansion of investigations into former President Yoon’s martial law plans. Prosecutors allege that Yoon secretly sent drones to North Korea to justify martial law, which led to the leakage of military secrets.

A special prosecution team has charged Yoon with “providing benefit to the enemy and abuse of power.” During the martial law attempt, armed troops were sent to the parliament, marking an unsuccessful effort by Yoon to seize power. In January, Yoon became the first sitting president in South Korea’s history to be detained.

Family and Other Involved Parties

Yoon’s wife, Kim Keon Hee, is also in custody, facing charges including stock market manipulation and other corruption-related offenses. This is the first instance in South Korea where a former first couple has been detained simultaneously.
