Attack During Evening Prayers
At least five people were killed and 35 others injured when an explosive device went off at Al-Adum mosque at around 6:00 p.m. during evening prayers. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the wounded were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the State Specialist Hospital.
Police said bomb disposal teams cordoned off the area and began sweeping operations shortly after the blast.
No Claim of Responsibility
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident comes amid heightened security concerns across Nigeria’s northeast, where Islamist insurgent groups have waged a 15-year campaign targeting civilians, places of worship, and markets.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and urged residents to remain vigilant.
Official Condemnation and Security Measures
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack as “barbaric and inhumane,” calling assaults on places of worship a desecration. He urged increased vigilance at religious and public sites, particularly during the holiday season.
Security agencies said additional patrols and checks would remain in place as inquiries continue.
