Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman Tufan Erhurman met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, pressing for the removal of long-standing isolation measures on Northern Cyprus and outlining his approach to reviving efforts toward a settlement on the island.
Talks Held at UN Headquarters
According to a written statement from the Presidency of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the meeting took place at UN headquarters and was conducted in a positive atmosphere. Discussions focused primarily on the Cyprus issue, alongside current regional and international developments.
Erhurman briefed Guterres on the four-point methodology he has previously shared publicly regarding the resolution process, as well as recent progress on confidence-building measures between the parties.
Call to End Isolation of Turkish Cypriots
During the meeting, Erhurman stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people have been subjected to what he described as unjust and unlawful isolation for years. He underlined that these measures should be lifted without further delay, arguing that continued restrictions undermine trust and prospects for a sustainable settlement.
The issue of isolation remains a central concern for the Turkish Cypriot side, which has repeatedly called on the international community to take concrete steps to address political, economic, and social constraints.
Accompanying Delegation
Erhurman was accompanied at the meeting by Presidential Undersecretary Mehmet Dana, TRNC New York Representative Ambassador Murat Soysal, and Presidential Adviser on Diplomacy and Foreign Relations İpek Borman.
The meeting comes amid renewed discussions on confidence-building steps, though fundamental differences between the parties on the future of Cyprus continue to pose challenges to a comprehensive agreement.
